Tasmania Weddings

Tasmania has quietly become one of Australia's most sought-after wedding destinations.

From vineyard estates and luxury lodges to rugged coastlines, historic properties and waterfront restaurants, Tasmania offers an incredible variety of wedding experiences within a relatively small area. Couples can choose between Hobart's food and wine scene, the beaches of the East Coast, the vineyards of the Tamar Valley or the wilderness of Cradle Mountain, all while giving guests a reason to turn the celebration into a holiday.

It's one of the reasons Tasmania weddings feel so different.

Rather than simply booking a venue, couples are often choosing a destination and building an experience around it. Long lunches overlooking vineyards, weekends spent exploring the coastline, intimate celebrations in remote locations and multi-day gatherings with family and friends have all become part of what makes getting married in Tasmania so appealing.

As a Hobart wedding photographer of over 400 weddings, most of them here in Tasmania, I've seen celebrations in every corner of the state. What keeps drawing me back is how different each one feels. The scenery changes, the venues change, and the atmosphere changes, but the common thread is always the same: Tasmania has a way of making weddings feel more intentional.

One of the best things about planning a wedding in Tasmania is the sheer variety available.

The decisions you make around location, timing and the team you surround yourself with will ultimately shape the experience you create.

Tasmania's Wedding Community

One of the things couples often notice when planning a wedding in Tasmania is how connected the wedding industry feels.

Because Tasmania is relatively small, venues, planners, florists, celebrants, caterers, musicians and photographers regularly work together throughout the year. Many of us have spent years collaborating on weddings across the state and have built genuine friendships along the way.

That might not sound important at first, but it often has a huge impact on the experience couples receive. Communication tends to be easier, vendors know how each other work, and everyone is focused on creating the best possible experience rather than simply showing up and doing their individual job.

It's one of the reasons Tasmania weddings often feel so relaxed and seamless behind the scenes.

The Best Time of Year for a Tasmania Wedding

Summer

Summer is the busiest wedding season. Long evenings, warmer weather and endless daylight make it ideal for outdoor ceremonies, vineyard weddings and coastal celebrations.

Autumn

Autumn is my favourite of Tasmania's seasons. The vineyards begin changing colour, temperatures remain comfortable and the softer light creates incredible conditions for photography.

Winter

Winter weddings continue to grow in popularity, particularly at venues like Pumphouse Point and Cradle Mountain Lodge. The cooler weather, fireplaces and moody landscapes create a completely different atmosphere.

Spring

Spring brings fresh landscapes, wildflowers and slightly quieter schedules before the peak summer season begins. It's a great option for couples wanting longer days and more venue availability.

Tasmanian Wedding Venues

One of the things I love most about being a Tasmanian wedding photographer is that no two weddings ever feel quite the same.

Tasmania isn't defined by a single landscape or venue style. Within a few hours you can move from rugged coastlines to rolling vineyards, historic estates, modern architecture, mountain ranges, and tiny seaside towns that feel completely removed from the rest of the world.

That variety gives couples the freedom to build a wedding around the kind of experience they actually want rather than trying to fit into a particular formula.

Whether you're planning a large celebration with 150 guests or a small destination wedding with your closest people, Tasmania offers a backdrop that feels intentional, unique, and genuinely memorable.

Hobart and Southern Tasmania

Hobart is where many couples begin their search for a Tasmanian wedding venue, and it's easy to see why. The city combines world-class food and wine with waterfront views, historic architecture, and some of the state's most iconic wedding locations.

Some couples lean towards vineyard weddings at Frogmore Creek, while others are drawn to the waterfront charm of Peppermint Bay or the intimate atmosphere of Restaurant Maria. For something completely different, MONA continues to be one of the most unique wedding venues in Australia, while venues like Villa Howden, Stonefield Estate, The Point, Waterline and the Royal Tasmanian Botanical Gardens each offer their own take on a Southern Tasmanian wedding.

The diversity of venues means no two Hobart weddings feel the same. One weekend might involve portraits amongst the architecture of MONA, while the next is spent overlooking the Derwent River or celebrating beneath the trees at the Botanical Gardens.

Huon Valley, Derwent Valley and Bruny Island

Just outside of Hobart, options begin to open up.

The Huon Valley and Channel regions are home to forests, waterways, orchards and mountain ranges that create an entirely different atmosphere from the city. Weddings here often feel slightly more adventurous and connected to the landscape itself.

One of my favourite venues in the Derwent Valley is The Agrarian Kitchen, where incredible food and a beautiful setting come together effortlessly. Bruny Island has also become increasingly popular with couples wanting a destination-style wedding experience without leaving Tasmania.

The further south you travel, the more Tasmania's natural beauty starts to take centre stage.

East Coast Tasmania

The East Coast is one of the most sought-after wedding destinations in Tasmania, and it's not difficult to understand why.

From Swansea and Freycinet through to Bicheno and the Bay of Fires, the coastline feels completely different from anywhere else in Australia. White sand beaches, granite headlands and crystal-clear water create an incredible backdrop for weddings, elopements and multi-day celebrations.

Venues like Piermont Retreat, Freycinet Lodge, Seastone and Thalia Haven each showcase a different side of the East Coast experience. Further north, Spring Bay Mill has become a favourite for couples wanting spectacular coastal views combined with modern facilities and sustainability-focused design.

The East Coast attracts couples who want their wedding to feel like a holiday for both themselves and their guests. It's the sort of place where people stay for a long weekend, spend time exploring, and turn the celebration into a genuine experience.

If you're planning a smaller celebration, my guide to Tasmanian Elopements includes some of my favourite locations across the East Coast.

Launceston and Tamar Valley

Northern Tasmania offers a completely different wedding experience.

The Tamar Valley is known for its vineyards, rolling countryside, historic estates and relaxed atmosphere.

Vaucluse Estate continues to be one of the region's standout wedding venues, while the surrounding Tamar Valley provides endless opportunities for beautiful portrait locations and unforgettable wedding weekends.

Many couples choosing Northern Tasmania are drawn to the combination of excellent food and wine, beautiful scenery, and a slightly more relaxed pace.

Central Highlands

For couples wanting dramatic scenery, it's difficult to look past Tasmania's central regions.

Cradle Mountain Lodge remains one of the state's most iconic wedding destinations, offering mountain views, alpine landscapes and a wedding experience unlike anywhere else in Australia.

Pumphouse Point delivers something entirely different. Set on the edge of Lake St Clair, it offers a uniquely Tasmanian experience that feels remote, luxurious and deeply connected to the surrounding wilderness.

These locations are ideal for couples who love nature and want their wedding to feel immersed in the landscape.

Tasman Peninsula

The Tasman Peninsula is one of the most underrated wedding regions in Tasmania.

Towering sea cliffs, rugged coastlines, dramatic walking tracks and endless ocean views create some of the most spectacular scenery anywhere in the country.

It's particularly well suited to intimate weddings and elopements, where the landscape becomes a major part of the experience. The combination of coastal scenery and raw natural beauty makes the Tasman Peninsula one of my favourite places to photograph in Tasmania.

North West Coast and West Coast

Tasmania's North West and West Coast offer a side of the state that many visitors never see.

The landscapes feel bigger, the towns feel quieter, and the scenery becomes increasingly wild as you head west.

Venues like Sandridge Estate provide an incredible base for weddings on the North West Coast, while destinations such as Captain's Rest have become iconic for couples seeking something truly unique and off-grid.

This region is perfect for couples who value privacy, adventure and a wedding experience that feels completely their own.
